FirstLink’s HotLine is staffed primarily by Volunteers. Who are the main lifeline for HotLine. Approximately 75% of calls are answered by volunteers.

Just under half of the calls received at the FirstLink HotLine are for information and Referral. HotLine volunteers provide information to callers about community services that help people in need and explain how to get help from those services. Volunteers also talk to callers in need of help to ensure they are referred to the most appropriate agency. Information and referral services provides information about the resources offered by our local nonprofit community, support groups and a number of other services. A common misconception about HotLine is that the person calling needs to be suicidal or in crisis to call. In fact, HotLine is there for all people who have questions. If they can’t help you, they will be able to refer you to someone who can.

About 45% of the calls to the FirstLink HotLine are for listening and support. These callers are in need of a caring ear and a little advice. Callers can range from a child home alone after school to a struggling college student who doesn’t know where to turn or someone who just lost their spouse to cancer. The HotLine is a neutral place people can call just to talk if they feel that there is no one else to talk to or don’t have a good support system at home. Volunteers are trained to listen to callers problems, to be nonjudgmental and to be open to anything.

The remainder of calls, just over 10%, are for Crisis Intervention. This includes suicidal callers and those who are concerned for another. Some callers are in domestic abuse situations and have no place else to turn.
